Black Mold Remediation

People are getting more concerned and aware about the health hazards brought about by black mold. While it is true that the effects of toxic mold are most often harmless, it’s always better to be on the safer side before matters get worst. Stop it before it leads to a debilitating illness.

There are no specific standards for black mold remediation because there are a lot of varying opinions and it still belongs to an unregulated field. Since black mold grows and multiplies in areas where there is a lot of moisture or wetness, the first thing you have to do is to isolate and remove all possible causes of moisture.

When I say all possible causes, I mean ALL! Mold can grow on hidden surfaces like the backside of dry wall, wallpaper, top of ceiling tiles or the underside of carpets. Check the pipe chases and utility channels, acoustic liners inside duct work and roof materials that are above the ceiling tile as well.

If moisture is not present, the mold will not grow. It sounds simple but it actually is not because it’s so hard to target the source of moisture. It can come from many different sources such as water in the basement, leaking pipes, condensation and humidity levels among others.

After pinpointing and fixing the main source of moisture in the area, the next thing you have to do is to remove all objects contaminated by toxic mold. Again, this will not be easy. Everything that has been contaminated or infected with black mold for 72 hours or longer should be taken away and destroyed.

Look for some effective moldicides and other chemical sprays that are powerful enough to kill any potential remaining infestation. If you are not so certain about the correct procedures in killing molds, you can always call a professional to do it for you.

The most important thing that you have to remember is to keep moisture at bay all the time. Do not let mold grow again. Control the moisture in your home before it controls you.
